"The Valkyries are fearsome sisters of the order used at the head of a charge, screaming out their prayers of war as they attack the enemy with their power spears."
This started out as a passion project where I wanted to make a Valkyrie character from the roleplaying game Mutant Chronicles. I then realized I could combine it with taking a custom head through the mesh-to-metahuman pipeline, and see how much I could push the fidelity. This is areal-time character rendered in UE5, with a Metahuman fully functional face rigg.
One of the most interesting part of this project was the process of transforming the concept that has a more stylized, old school art style, and make it more realistic and grim. I spent a lot of time studying references of real medieval armor to figure out the logistics and how it would look if it had been through battles many times over.
The armor was almost completely modeled in Zbrush, cloth physics made in Marvelous Designer, I used a TextureXYZ face to create the face details and albedo, textures made in Substance Painter. The body is a custom rigg that was made to support the armor better. For the sake of scoping and wanting to explore what could be done inside of UE5, I used a Metahuman haircut and then altered the groom and hair shader to fit the concept and mood of the character.
Since the focus was on the armor and face of the character and I am not a dedicated weapon artist, I decided to use a purchased 3d model from a kit bash gun set made by talented Martin Boldo (martinboldo.artstation.com).
